Murdock (President of the National Congress of American Indians, Mohave); Peter MacDonald, Sr. (Chairman of the Navajo Tribal Council, Navajo); and Jim Thorpe (athlete, Sac and Fox), are profiled in order to offer insights into Native American life. The short profiles, in narrative, or question-and-answer format, generally address the subject's childhood and education, obstacles to achievement in his chosen field, and his hopes for Indian people today. The careers represented vary widely and include education, art, business, linguistics, philosophy, engineering, and athletics. Over 20 tribes are represented. (SB) |
